Comments: 4 steep 'hands-on-knees' hills, plenty of slippery, sticky mud, 2 river crossings.
Not much surface water (till rain started)
Back ache worse than usual, couldn't even relax on downhill bits; plus still coughing from last week's cold.
Alec went for short walk before rain started.
A few other NFR; met up with Sue and Andy at Woodbridge pub afterwards (lovely home-made soup).

Tried harder on Saturday (as UK Trail champs), but lost time due to missing marker.

Ox 'half'

24th May 2015Ox 'half marathon' MT 14 miles (also ultra and marathon options)
Venue: Rushmore Estate, Tollard Royal
Travelling time: 40 mins
Weather: Warm, cloudy, slight dampness on hilltops
Comments: Over-distance, with a final steep hill when I expected to have already finished.
Still had to walk up hills, a couple of steep ones, but none of it flat, with long 'undulations' and scenic valleys.
My back suffered because there was quite a lot on hard tracks - either the old stony droves, or concrete farm roads.
Only a couple of water stations, but well-stocked one at 11 miles.
Chip timing, using paper loop tied to laces - worried it might get torn off on narrow paths.
Well organised, plenty of route markers but not one I think I'll do again.

The best bit was lunch afterwards, at the golf club where it was based.
Age-groups: Prizes only for 1st 3, M and F.
Results:
Andy: 1h:46m:01s (6th: 4th M40)
Sue: 2h:24m:10s (90th: 5th F50)
Rosemarie: 2h:38m:57s (132nd: 2nd F60)

252 finishers.

South Downs marathon relay

20th June 201526mile/4, trail, hilly (approx 2x5½ miles, 2x7½ miles)
Venue: Slindon College to Queen Elizabeth park (Petersfield): 2nd leg start near Upwaltham, finish near Cocking.
Travelling time: 1½ hours. No problems parking.
Weather: Cloudy, warm, slight dampness.
Comments: As the slowest in our team, I bagged the shortest and easiest section.
Dawn got our numbers beforehand so we didn't all have to register at the start.
Graham drove Dawn to the start, Alec took me (leg 2), Sue and Caroline went together (legs 3/4).
Arriving at our changeover venue, we were met by Graham, bringing news of a mix-up in our race numbers, and a new number to pin on my vest!
Fortunately we had plenty of time, and watching the opposite hill through binoculars, we could see Dawn coming down the track from afar.

Only one long steep hill for me, then relatively easy going, on wide undulating chalk tracks.
Overtaken by faster marathon runners, who had started a half hour later than us, but did manage to pass a few other ladies carrying batons.
My last mile was steeply downhill, on a very solid farm track – jarring on the legs, but I managed a 7½ -minute mile (haven’t gone that fast for ages!)

No problems with handover of baton containing the chip.
Ground dry - luckily it wasn't wet, or it would have been slippery and much more difficult.
Team rehydration and lunch at '5 Bells' in Buriton after.
Age-groups: Relay - v40, v50, gents/ladies (mixed included with gents).
Results:
New Forest Mudlarks team:

Total time 4h:9m:11s
Dawn: 1h:14m:48s (7.5miles)
Rosemarie: 48m45s (13.1miles)
Sue: 1h:11m04s (20miles)
Caroline: 54m:34s (26.2miles)

14th ladies team, of 25 finishers; 1st fv50 team
66th team overall, of 112 finishers

Afternoon race, 2:30 start. Very hard run, classed as category BM fell-race.
Walked most of long first hill on tarmac and quite a lot of other bits.
5 minutes slower than last year (hamstring/sciatica very painful).
Several other NFR there.
More runners in older age-groups.
Age-groups: Up to v60 gents and ladies.
Results: Rosemarie: 1h:32m:20s (4th fv60, out of 10)

Lytchett Summer relays

18th July 20155 x 5k; off-road
Venue: Holton Lee (just south of Lytchett Minster).
Travelling time: 45mins
Weather: Bright, chilly breeze.
Comments: Organised by Lytchett Manor Striders club.
We needed 5 ladies for our Mudlarks team, Rosemarie, Dawn, Sue and Caroline, plus we persuaded Maggie to join us, despite her aversion to rough terrain.
Support team of Alec, Graham and Bruce.

Each runner did a 5k loop around Holton heath on gravel tracks and woodland paths, with only a very short tarmac section.
Undulating rather than hilly, though there was a short sharp climb to test tired legs near the end.
Some very competitive runners at the front, but we were just pleased not to be last!
Very pleased with my time considering dodgy hamstring.

Very sociable and well-organised, with plenty of space for everyone to picnic, and a barbecue, cake-stall and well-stocked bar to keep us happy.
Also an excellent free pre- and post-race massage, which we made full use of.
Age-groups: Prizes to first mens, mixed, ladies and junior teams.
Results:
New Forest Mudlarks team:

Total time 2h:13m:40s
Dawn: 25m29s
Rosemarie: 28m49s
Caroline: 25m15s
Maggie: 29m01s
Sue: 25m06s

3rd ladies team, of 4 finishers
29th team overall, of 33 finishers

Studland Stampede

11th Oct 20157.5mile (12k) trail
Venue: Knoll beach NT car park, Studland.
Travelling time: 35mins to ferry
Weather: Bright, chilly breeze.
Comments: Organised by VN events.
Early entry needed as race full by July.
Lift there with Claire and Phil (he ran too). Expensive travel: £3.80 each way on ferry, +£4 carparking.

Crowded start on beach, ok with chip timing, but then big hold-up at zig-zag steps after ½ mile.
Undulating rather than hilly, but a killer mile of soft sandy dunes before the last section along beach.
Not really fit enough for run - little training due to back/hamstring problems.
Excellent free pre-race massage.
Several other NFR there (including our usual ladies group).
Age-groups: Prizes in 10-year age-groups.
Results:
Rosemarie: 1h:22m:59s 7th fv60, out of 8 (a few months too young to get into v70 category!)
138 of 189 ladies, 350 of 419 finishers
No need to have worried about being last.
Phil: 1h:02m:53s

Venue: Ocknells campsite (off A31, near Minstead), Hants
Travelling time: about 30mins, left home 8:30am
Weather: Mild, bright.
Comments: aka Minstead Stinger. Drove there on my own.
Based in campsite, but no use of facilities (only portaloos).
Not fit enough for 10 miles so took the easier 5 mile option.
Planned to enter on-the-day but got transferred entry from injured NFR.
Same course as last year: all off-road but very little mud this time.
Undulating, mainly down for first half, mainly up coming back, with long hill to finish.
5 mile route (actually 5.4miles) covered first and last part of full course, with cut across in the middle.
Well marked and marshalled, goody bag.
Waited for presentations - some NFR age-group winners.
8 NFR runners in the 5 mile race.
Pleased to be under 10-min per mile.
Age-groups: 40+,50+,60+, gents and ladies.

Park run Wilverley

26th Dec 20155k
Venue: Wilverley enclosure.
Travelling time: 15min.
Weather: Mild,cloudy.
Comments: Drove by myself. My first park-run!
No entry fee, my printed barcode ok for finish recording.

Dawn encouraged me around, but just failed to get under ½ hour (sore hamstring didn't help).
Impressed by speed and detail of results service - online by same afternoon.
